How to help

OpenEgov is a wiki based site. That means that users can not only read but also write to pages on the site - or even create new ones from scratch. You can find out how to edit articles on OpenEgov - or if you prefer to learn by trial and error, make for the sandbox where you can change whatever you like. If you are hoping to edit the site, you will need to create an account, so you can identify yourself (and to help me eliminate wiki spammers).

This software was orginally created for the wikipedia web site; if you get really stuck on any of the technical details you can visit the wikipedia tutorial, the wikipedia FAQ, or the wikipedia help pages for more information.

Things you can do

More material

The main thing that's needed for now is just more material: whether adding new pages or expanding on old pages. The simplest thing to do is just adding lists of useful links, but better, if possible, is to embed links in text.

Don't worry about whether your entry is good enough or relevant enough - someone will edit it! In many cases the current page is so sketchy that any additions at all are an improvement.

The news page

Most pages can keep their relevance for some time without many changes; but the news page really needs adding to frequently to have any point. So please add any topical news you can!

Monitoring pages

Wikis tend to build up clutter (or, recently, wiki spam). It's not much work to keep them clean if the load is spread, Adopt a few pages on a subject you're interested in, add them to your watchlist, and keep an eye on them occasionally.

New user information

You can always contribute anonymously, but the site works better if your contributions are signed. And creating a user account gives you a semi-private area to practice writing to the wiki in!

Ways to communicate

At the moment, just the wiki itself. There will almost certainly be a mailing list at some point.

Running mediawiki on a rather small machine on an ADSL line. This will have to change if the site gets any traffic.
